Wolfpark

Interview with Daniel.

The visit to Wolf Park, offered to students from IES Torre Almenara the opportunity to have an unforgettable experience in which they could spend a day among wolves. The caregivers reported many of the characteristics and habits of wolves and attitudes that are taken at the time of treating with wolves and dogs...

At the end of the visit, we had the opportunity to interview Daniel Weigend, born in 1966 in Würzburg, Germany, has worked with dogs most of his life and has trained dogs for police and military services. During this time he developed a great interest in wolves and felt the impulse to share knowledge and passion for these wonderful animals with others. He has made many field studies on dogs and wolves investigating social behaviour in more detail.

(Daniel with the wolfs)

-How many years ago did this idea arise?
In fact, I always wanted to carry it out, but if I have to say a number of years I think about 25 years ago.

-When was Lobo Park created?
About ten years ago.

-How long did this idea?
In fact, I always wanted to carry it out, but if I have to say a number of years I think since about 25.
- When did Lobo Park?
In the last ten years.
- How has climate adaptation been for wolves in the Alaskan tundra, for example? It was really easy, because the climate in the tundra experiences very extreme temperature changes in which we can observe very low temperatures and a short summers with warm temperatures without any shadows because of the short vegetation. Then the winter in Spain, they find it warm and summers are normal because they have in their enclosures many trees that provide shade and they have ponds in which they can refresh themselves.

-How many different species of wolves exist in the park at this time?
Currently there are four different species here. The species are Timber wolves (Canis lupus occidentalis), the wolves of Alaskan Tundra (Canis lupus tundrorum), European wolves (Canis lupus lupus) and Iberian wolves (Canis lupus signatus).
- Is it possible to introduce an alive animal to pretend that wolves can hunt as they do in nature?
No, it's forbidden and wolves usually feed of dead animals and would be cruel to expose a sheep (for example) to that experience. The the wolves would begin to feed of it without killing it before, the sheep would suffer too much.
- What is their diet based on?
They eat meat from the slaughterhouse of Malaga and natural fodder. It's forbidden to give the wolves entire bodies of dead animals.

-How many people work at Lobo Park?
Right now, eight people.
- How is living together with wolves is?
It is very good. I do not belong to the pack and I am not part of the hierarchy. I work with them, not domesticate them, I just take away their fear of humans and make then keep their instinct.
- What is your daily routine?I have no routine, in this point I'm pretty free and I do not see my job as a task I see it as a pleasure, the pleasure of observing the wolves and their behaviour ...
- What should we learn from wolves?
Actually, we should learn a lot. Wolves have a great social life in which they avoid confrontations and wars. They are very friendly animals that live in packs like a big family ...

We appreciate the collaboration of Daniel for the realization of this interview andhope to return soon to Lobo Park…
